    Atlas Coal Mine National Historic Site
    Atlas Coal Mine

    Step into the past, when coal was King. The Atlas Coal Mine is a registered provincial historic resource and designated National Historic Site, which preserves the vast coal mining heritage of Alberta. Walk the interpretive trails around an original mine site; join an interpreter for a climb to the top of Canada's last wooden tipple; step into the now quiet wash house; enter a fully furnished miner's shack; hike up to see the old headworks and dynamite shed; walk around antique machinery; watch the award winning video "Thunder in the Valley". Displays, trails, interpretive programs and much more! Don't miss the unique souvenir collection in the Miner's Lamp Gift Shop. Washrooms, snacks and picnic area. The site is open to the public thoughout the summer, and year round for group bookings. Individual, family and group rates available. Admission includes all programmes and tours.

    Royal Tyrrell Museum
    Royal Tyrrell Museum

    Named after Joseph Burr Tyrrell who discovered the first dinosaur fossils in the Drumheller Valley, the Royal Tyrrell Museum contains a wealth of information on Alberta's rich fossil heritage. This internationally recognized palaeontology museum features a large display of complete dinosaur skeletons and a number of interactive exhibits including a Cretaceous garden. Museum amenities include a cafeteria, a picnic area, a gift shop and nearby Badland trails.

    Remington Carriage Museum
    Remington Carriage Museum Cardston

    Close to 50 of the 225 carriages here are from the private collection started in the 1950s by Don Remington. The centre contains a restoration workshop, a theatre, cafeteria, gift shop, tack room and stables. Horse-drawn carriage rides, $4 adults, $2.50 child, $12 family, offered daily May 15 to Sept 14. Admission $7.50 adult, $6.50 sen, $4 child, $17 family. Open daily 9 am - 6 pm May 15 to Sept 14; daily 10 am - 5 pm rest of the year.

    Gopher Hole Museum
    Strange but true, Torrington is the home to the infamous Gopher Hole Museum. This attraction features stuffed gophers (Richardson ground squirrels) posed in a series of 47 anthropomorphic scenes, from a hair dresser to a preacher to an RCMP officer. Located north of Calgary, east of Olds on highway #27. Open daily from 10am to 5pm. Admission $2 for adults.

    Sir Alexander Galt Museum
    Once Lethbridge's primary hospital, the Galt Museum is now Lethbridge's museum Visitors will find interesting displays of early settler life in the region as well as historical artifacts. Always dynamic, the museum features changing exhibits. The museum is named after the Canadian High Commissioner in London who, in 1882, financed a mining operation that led to the founding of Lethbridge. A gift shop is on site. The Archives department can be contacted for research. Daily 10 am - 5 pm. Admission free for the general museum, prices vary for exhibits.

    East Coulee Museum/Archives
    21 km (12.6mi) southeast on Hwy 10 from Drumheller is East Coulee, once a booming coal mining town. The School Museum and Cultural Centre, built in 1930, is a provincial historic site and houses a restored scholl room complete with books, maps, desks, photos and creaking wooden floors. Another room features antique mining equipment, craft store and tea roo. May through Sept daily 9am - 6pm. Off season 9am - 4:30pm.

    Museum of Miniatures
    Cardston's Museum of Miniatures re-creates Alberta's Wild West down to the minutest of details. The displays encompass all of the most common scenes of the early 20th century, including a pioneer fort, a native village, a growing prairie town, fields of buffalo and a forest full of wild animals. Miniatures are handmade by the curator built to the exact scale of 1/12.

    Raymond Pioneer Museum

    Lebel Mansion Historic Site
    This lovely Vistorian family home once sheltered one of Pincher creek's most prominent families, the wealthy Lebel family. It spent 60 years in this role, then becoming the town's only hospital for 30 more years. It has been a historic site since 1983.

    Brooks and District Museum

    Fort Museum
    The first North West Mounted Police (NWMP) outpost in the west was built on an island in the Oldman River and named after the force commander, Colonel J.F. Macleod. Built in 1874, it displays early NWMP, Indian, pioneers and present-day Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) artifacts. A Musical Ride adds pomp and pageantry four times daily through July and Aug. Open May 1 to June 31, daily 9 am - 5 pm; July/Aug to 8:30 pm. $4 adults, $3.50 sen, $2 youth, $1.25 child.

    Courthouse Museum & Archives
    Depicts the pioneer life of the area including home furnishings, an 1876 square grand piano and a display on the Hutterite way of life.     Three Rivers Rock & Fossil Museum

    Heritage Acres
    This living, outdoor museum brings to life the trials and tribulations of traditional farming. See an original Doukhobor barn, made by its namesake, a group who practises a dissenting form of Christianity who originated in Russia. An antique school and several pieces of farm equipment are also preserved here. Groups are welcome.
