Step into the past, when "Coal was King". The Atlas Coal Mine is a registered provincial historic resource and designated National Historic Site, which preserves the vast coal mining heritage of Alberta. Step into the now quiet wash house; enter a fully furnished miner's shack; walk around antique machinery; or watch the award winning video "Thunder in the Valley". Wayne - Ghost Town
+ My Favorites
A worthwhile detour from the Hoodoo Trail is the 9 km (5.4 mi) trip on Hwy 10X from Rosedale into the ghost town of Wayne. You'll cross no less than 11 one-way bridges on the road in. One of the last remaining landmarks in this coal boom-town of the 1920's and '30s is the Last Chance Saloon in the Rosedeer Hotel. This end-of-the-road establishment has changed little since 1913.

Bellevue Underground Mine
+ My Favorites
Enter the blackest dark at Bellevue's underground mine site, where several million tons of coal were extracted from the ground between the years of 1903 to 1961. The year of 1910 proved to be the most dangerous and deadly for workers, as two separate explosions killed more than 30 people. Strikes caused the mine to close periodically throughout its five decades of operations, but it remained profitable until the 1950s, when it became more viable to switch to diesel production.

Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village
+ My Favorites
Named after frontiersman John George 'Kootenai' Brown, this village is a museum and heritage facility that is home to 16 historical buildings, two museum structures and a preserved three-room log cabin, one of Brown's residences in the late 19th century. Operated by the Pincher Creek and District Historical Society, the village is located in Pincher Creek, Alberta just east of the Rocky Mountains.
Brown was a local frontiersman who settled in the Waterton Lakes area in 1877 and spearheaded the establishment and conservation of the smallest of the Rocky Mountain parks-Waterton Lakes National Park, located 50 km south of the village. Brown became the park's first warden 18 years later, two years after the area gained Park status. Brown's nickname 'Kootenai' came about with his association with the First Nations tribe in the mid 1800's.
Visitors can learn about the frontier history of southwestern Alberta and explore archives of the history of the Pincher Creek area at this rural facility, which is open year-round. Take a guided tour of some of the original cabins, ranch houses and the blacksmith shop that were built in the pioneer period or browse the museum gift shop.

Fort Whoop-up Interpretive Centre
+ My Favorites
Fort Whoop-up was the first and largest whisky trading post in the region. Established in 1869 by American merchants, the fort’s illicit trade in “firewater” for buffalo robes, furs and other articles spurred the arrival of the North West Mounted Police in 1874. The site includes an interpretive centre, display gallery and wagon rides. May 11 to mid Sept, Mon to Sat 10 am - 6 pm, Sun noon - 5 pm. Tours, special events, train ride and gift shop. The fort is in Indian Battle Park, site of the last major North American Indian battle fought in 1870 between the Blackfoot and Cree.

Leitch Collieries
+ My Favorites
Leitch Collieries opened in 1907, and was the only completely Canadian-owned mine in the Pass, and was singularly ambitious in scale. Owners built 107 coke ovens, arranged in a massive row, a huge wooden washery and a tipple with a daiy capacity of 1,000 to 2,000 tons of coal. Chaotic coal prices forced the mine to close in 1915. The stone remains of the original buildings display early coal mining methods and ways of life, and interpretive displays line the trails.
