Red Deer River

The Red Deer River is a tributary of the South Saskatchewan River and measures 724 km (450 mi) in length. Sundre, Red Deer, Blackfalds and Drumheller are the communities that are located along the river. It is also a great place to go fishing for brown trout.

Helmer Dam

Hanna is a popular bird-watching and fishing destination and enthusiastic anglers can head to Helmer Dam to try to land a Rainbow Trout. The dam is located two km (one mi) west of town and camping is available at the adjacent Fox Lake Park.

Lake Newell

Touted as one of Alberta's warmest lakes, Lake Newell is situated near the town of Brooks, west of Calgary. The newly developed Lake Newell Resort surrounds the western edge of the lake and offers water skiing, fishing and sailing on the lake, as well as swimming and just hanging out on a beach.

Lac Ste. Anne

This large lake is located 75 km west of Edmonton in Lac Ste. Anne County. Historically, the lake was a summer gathering point for First Nations people, come to hunt buffalo. Today, thousands of First Nations pilgrims journey to the lake each July to celebrate their Catholic faith. Fishing, boating, windsurfing, and cross-country skiing are popular activities on the lake, and campgrounds are situated along its shores.

Oldman River

The Oldman River runs across the southern part of Alberta from the Rocky Mountains on its western border to Grassy Lake and the Bow River in the east. The river passes through Fort MacLeod, Lethbridge and Taber before joining the South Saskatchewan River and eventually making its way to the Hudson Bay.
