Welcome to Hillcrest, AB!
The Hillcrest Mine began its operations in the Crowsnest Pass in 1905, removing several thousand tons of coal from deep veins inside the Rocky Mountains to feed the hungry bellies of Canadian Pacific Railway engines. Although a highly successful enterprise that supported the town for 35 years, the mine is also the sight of Canada's worst-ever mining disaster, which occured in 1914. Successive explosions killed 189 workers, approximately 20 per cent of the town's population, and Hillcrest's cemetery is a sombre reminder of the tragedy, with row after row headstones marking the graves of the young men who lost their lives on that fateful day. The Hillcrest Mine Memorial stands nearby, erected in 2000 to commemorate the victims of the many mining accidents that took away husbands, fathers and sons across the country. The Hear That Whistle Blow tour explores the remains of the Hillcrest Collieries, offering insight into the daily duties of a coal miner and the dangers they faced. Excursions leave from the Frank Slide Interpretive Centre.
