Situated in Alberta’s South approximately 22 km (14 mi) southeast of Drumheller and 154 km (96 mi) northeast of Calgary, East Coulee sits in the Red Deer River Valley and is renowned for its surrounding badlands geology, including awe-inspiring hoodoo formations and namesake coulees shaped by time and the elements.Once a thriving coal town boasting a population of over 3000, the riverside village now highlights its colourful past with an array of historical attractions and sites, including the Atlas Coal Mine National Historic Site. Visitors to this important heritage site can climb the last wooden tipple in all of Canada or explore the subterranean tunnels where coal was mined from the early 20th century up until 1979. The historic town offers ease of access to the amenities and attractions of greater Drumheller, including the Royal Tyrrell Museum and neighbouring ghost towns and hamlets, replete with the distinctive pioneering heritage characteristic of the region.
